The Introduction of Sapphire

Sapphire single crystal, is pure aluminum oxide (α-Al2O3). It has excellent thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, light transmittance, chemical stability, high-temperature resistance, high strength, high hardness and a series of excellent characteristics. It is a window material for infrared devices, missiles, submarines, satellite space technology, detection and high-power laser, high-quality optical materials, wear-resistant bearing materials and substrate materials.


The lattice constant mismatch between C-plane of sapphire and GaN single crystal film is small, and it also meets the requirements of high-temperature resistance in the growth process of GaN single crystal film, which makes sapphire chip become the key substrate material for white/blue LED, and is widely used in LED industry. Because the temperature distribution of sapphire single crystal grown by heat exchange method (HEM) is contrary to the gravity field, there is no convection in the melt, which ensures the crystal growth in a stable state. The sapphire single crystal has perfect optical uniformity and has no defects such as scattering, inclusion and bubble. Therefore, sapphire substrates are good substrate materials.


At present, the quality of the sapphire crystal grown by the heat exchange method is the best among all sapphire crystal growth methods. According to French Yole statistics, sapphire substrate materials account for about 75%, and semiconductor lighting (LED) substrate materials account for more than 95%. The acquisition of a high-performance chip is largely dependent on the surface processing quality of the sapphire substrate. Sapphire has high hardness and high chemical stability, which belongs to hard brittle and difficult to process materials. The process mainly involves high-precision equipment, high-performance diamond tool consumables and matching processing technology.
